Cardinal Vidal died at 86

The Augustinian friars led by BSN Rector Fr. Pacifico C. Nohara, OSA celebrated a Requiem Mass for the late Archbishop Emeritus of Cebu, His Eminence Ricardo J. Cardinal Vidal DD at the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral on October 19, 2017, the 2nd night of the Archbishop’s wake.

Cardinal Vidal died at 86

The beloved Archbishop Emeritus of Cebu, Ricardo J. Cardinal Vidal passed away on October 18, 2017 after years of battling pneumonia. He was 86. Cardinal Vidal has served Cebuano Catholics for 29 years as Archbishop.

Vidal who hails from Mogpog, Marinduque was a fervent devotee of Santo Niño de Cebu and a close friend of the Augustinian friars. As Archbishop of Cebu, Vidal gave the required canonical permission for the establishment of Augustinian religious houses in Cebu. At the time of the foundation of the new Province in 1984, there was only one Augustinian community in Cebu – that of the Basilica del Santo Niño. But by the end of Vidal’s term in 2010, four more houses were established in Cebu: the Santo Niño de Cebu Parish – Mohon Community in 1985, the Augustinian Novitiate and Prayer House Community in 1989, the Santo Niño Pilgrim Center Community (Provincial House) in 1993 and the Santo Niño Spirituality Center Community in 2010.  Vidal also consistently attended the veneration of the miraculous image of Santo Niño de Cebu hours before the grand foot procession on the day before the Fiesta Señor and would carry the sacred image to its carroza afterwards. For much of his 29 years as Archbishop of Cebu, Vidal also made it a point to preside at the six in the morning Pontifical Mass on the day of Fiesta Señor.

Also, many friars received their diaconal and presbyteral ordination from Cardinal Vidal and he would gladly grace occasions of celebrations when invited by the friars. Truly, the good Cardinal was a friend of the Augustinians and of everybody in Cebu and elsewhere and so it is right and just that the whole of Cebu mourned his death which while already expected still stunned and shocked many Cebuano Catholics.

May Señor Santo Niño de Cebu welcome His Eminence to his everlasting Kingdom! Pray for us to God, Cardinal Vidal!
