APAC Augustinian Youth Encounter 2015 in Cebu

Cebu City, Philippines – At least 513 youth in Asia came to Cebu City to join the Augustinian Youth Encounter 2015 from November 15-19, 2015. Majority of the delegates were from the different Augustinian-run schools and parishes in the country.

AYE is an APAC sanctioned youth activity that happens once in every two years. Last year, 2014, AYE was held in Ketapang, Indonesia with 250 delegates including teacher-companions. This year’s AYE had a special consideration when it was held in Cebu City. This was inspired in time of the three major celebrations of the Augustinians in the Philippines, namely, the 450th anniversary of the finding of the image of Sto. Nino, 450th anniversary of the Augustinian Presence in the Philippines and 50th year of the Sto. Nino Church as a Basilica Minore. The theme that guided the youth for their 5-day encounter was “Augustinian Legacy @ 450: Proclaiming the Word, Empowering the Poor and Sustaining the Mission.”

The Encounter’s inputs were given by four invited speakers abroad in the second and third day. These three speakers were Fray Richie Mercado, OSA, a Filipino-American from the Province of Chicago, in United States of America, whose talk was on Youth and Evangelization. Fr. Edward Daleng, OSA, the Assistant General of the Order of Saint Augustine to Africa and Chairperson of the International Commission on Youth, whose talk centers on Youth and the Poor in our Mission/Apostolate. Meanwhile, Fr. Tony Banks, OSA, the Assistant General of the Order of Saint Augustine to Asia-Pacific and Chairperson of the International Commission on Vocations shared on Youth Sustaining the Mission: A Vocation Paradigm. And, Fr. Henry Sunguti, OSA a Nigerian from the Province of Nigeria and member of the International Commission on Vocations talked on Corporate Social Responsibility: An Integral Part of our Mission.

Also on the third day and the following fifth day, activities highlighted in the Encounter were an outreach activity by feeding 500 students of Tejero Elementary School, a Tornaviaje (Walking Tour) or dubbed as the retracing the Augustinian roots, and a clean-up drive at a public market near the city. The youth had also enjoyed the dancing and singing presentations of every delegation by bringing with them the pride of their rich cultural backgrounds.
