Augustinians receive award in Mati

As part of the culmination of the 500 Years of Christianity celebrations in the Diocese of Mati, the Augustinians received an award as the first missionaries to evangelize the country since their arrival in 1565.

Last April 25, 2022, the culmination happened in Mati City, Davao Oriental. A Holy Mass started the ceremonies at the San Nicolas de Tolentino Cathedral at 3:00 pm, presided over by Most Rev. Abel Apigo, DD. It was followed by a walk for Catholic Faith from the Cathedral to the Baywalk. In the evening, there was a cultural presentation program.

The Augustinian community of Colegio San Agustin – Mati received the award on behalf of the Augustinians headed by their Prior, Rev. Fr. Victor Gonzaga, OSA.

Since its inauguration as a community, the Augustinians have been present in the Diocese in 2011. Their primary apostolate is the educational institution that caters Basic Education Programs to the people of Mati.

The RVM Sisters, who were the pioneering religious to arrive, the Jesuits, who built the church of Mati and the MIC, who pioneered in building educational institutions were also recognized in the event.
