Cebuano Augustinian Friar assigned to the Papal Sacristy

The Province of Santo Niño de Cebu- Philippines has chosen Rev. Fr. Jubanie Baller, OSA to work in the Papal Sacristy upon the request of the Prior General Alejandro Moral Anton, OSA in Rome.

Fr. Baller is a Cebuano who hails from Talisay City, Cebu. He joined the Augustinians in 2008 and was ordained priest on June 12, 2019.

He will be reporting on September 19, 2021 after his assignment as the Parochial Vicar of the St. Augustine of Hippo Parish, Gubat, Sorsogon for two years.

Fr. Baller will join the Augustinian community at the Papal Sacristy together with three other Augustinian friars from Italy, India, and Congo.

The main apostolate of the community is to prepare the liturgical vestments and vessels of the masses of the Pope at the Vatican and the Diocese of Rome.

In the past, a Filipino Augustinian, Rev. Fr. Nestor Bandalan Jr., OSA, was already assigned in the Papal Sacristy. Currently, he is now reporting as one of the friars of the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño de Cebu community.

Fr. Bandalan Jr., has been assisting Pope Francis’ masses for five years after his theological studies in the Augustinianum from July 2014 to December 2019.

The work at the Papal Sacristy is assigned to the Augustinians under the Office for the Liturgical Celebrations of the Supreme Pontiff which was headed by the Master of Pontifical Celebrations, the newly elected Bishop Guido Marini, until August 29, 2021.  

The last Augustinian Papal Sacristan was Dutch Bishop Pietro Canisio van Lierde in 1991 and Pope John Paul II confirmed that the Augustinians would remain present in the pontifical sacristy alongside the task of being guardians of the parish of St. Anne.

The Pontifical Sacristy has been entrusted to the Order of Saint Augustine since the 14th century.
