The Augustinian-administered St. Augustine of Hippo Parish in Saguday, Quirino Province is designated as one of the three Jubilee churches in the Diocese of Bayombong for the jubilee year of the 500th Anniversary of the Arrival of Christianity (500 YOC) in the Philippines.
The designation of being a jubilee church was issued by Pope Francis on February 25, 2021, together with other 536 pilgrim churches in the Philippines granted to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines and signed by the Vatican’s Apostolic Penitentiary, Cardinal Mauro Piacenza, which officially starts on April 4, 2021.
The faithful can receive plenary indulgence when they make a devotional pilgrimage to one of the designated “Jubilee Churches” until April 22, 2022.
When a pilgrim visits these churches, the faithful can receive a plenary indulgence, which grants the remission of the temporal punishment due to sins, which have already been forgiven. Still, one has to meet the usual conditions of going to confession, receiving the Eucharist, and praying for the intentions of the Pope.
According to Fr. Exuper Lumintac, OSA, Parish Priest, Most Rev. Jose Elmer I. Mangalinao, D.D. Bishop of the Diocese of Bayombong, he chose the Augustinian parish to be a jubilee church as a recognition of the Augustinians’ devotion to the Sto. Niño, which is the symbol of the faith of the 500 years of Christianity celebration. Other reasons for the selection of the parish is its strategic location and the number of priests assigned, who could assist to fulfill the needed conditions of a plenary indulgence, such as hearing confessions.
Most Rev. Mangalinao opened and blessed the Jubilee door of the parish on May 27, 2021, in the presence of the Augustinian pastors and the parishioners.
