San Jose Parish honors patroness of the City with a feast

Last October 7, 2021, the Augustinians and the Parish of San Jose Placer in Iloilo City celebrated the feast of the Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, the patroness of the City.

The 17th century image of the Blessed Virgin was crowned in diocesan rite on October 11, 1970 in the bishopric of Archbishop José María Cuenco.

A concelebrated mass was held at the parish, which was presided by the new Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Renchie Senoro, OSA and joined by the friars of the San Jose Community and some friars from the University of San Agustin Community.

Fr. Senoro is the 30th officially installed Augustinian parish priest of the church since it was turned over to the Augustinians in 1868. Only in 2020-2021 that the parish have an acting parish priest in the name of Fr. Jose R. Gonzales, OSA.

The image of Our Lady of the Rosary was found in 1616 on the shores of Iloilo, not far from its fortress, while excavations were being made to prepare trenches for the defense of the City against an invading Dutch squadron under the command of Admiral Spielberg, which attacked the island on 28 September 1616.
