During the annual State Convention of the Knights of Columbus Nevada State last May 13-15, 2022, Rev. Fr. Arlon Vergara, OSA was recognized as the Chaplain of the Year for the fraternal year 2021-2022.
Fr. Vergara has been assigned in the United States since 2007. The recognition acknowledges his positive impact on the Catholic communities he served for the past 15 years.
There were also other chaplains that were nominated, and Fr. Vergara was eventually chosen as he was nominated by the Knights of Columbus Bishop Manogue Assembly 612.
Fr. Arlon is currently the Associate Chaplain for the Nevada State Council, serving with enthusiasm and distinction the knights and their families of the Diocese of Reno for the past three years. In addition, he is our Worthy Faithful Friar serving our Assembly in the Reno-Sparks area for the past two years.
Father Arlon’s primary diocesan assignment is that of Parochial Vicar at Saint Therese Church of the Little Flower in Reno. Most notably, he has been a driving force to bring back a knight’s presence at that parish. In addition, he has been actively recruiting knights at the Holy Spirit Catholic Mission Church in New Washoe City, NV, where he celebrates a Latin Mass on Sundays.
In conjunction with Supremes’ Faith in Action program, Fr. Arlon has put together a series of spiritual retreats for knights and family. The following are of note: one was presented prior to the State Council Mid-year Meeting in Tonopah, in December 2019; another was a well-attended Lenten Retreat held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sparks, in March 2021. Currently, he is scheduled to host a Post-Resurrection Retreat at the Holy Spirit Mission Church, on April 30th. He is a high-energy priest.
Over the past Christmas holiday season, Fr. Arlon participated in the Simbang Gabi and Santo Nino masses showing pride in his Filipino heritage. Both masses were celebrated by our new Bishop of Reno, The Most Reverend Bishop Daniel Mueggenborg. Even with all this activity and his primary responsibilities as a parish priest, Fr. Arlon continues to contribute a daily gospel reflection on the Nevada State Council Facebook page.
In an e-mail correspondence with Fr. Vergara, to receive the award is a humbling experience, and at the same time expresses his thanks to the organization. He said, “I am humbled to receive such recognition of my ministry and I am happy to share such honor to the Order and in particular to our Province. Having received such award given by the Knights of Columbus of the State of Nevada, I feel deeply appreciated for what I have been doing to the Knights of Columbus.”
On behalf of the Augustinian Province of Santo Niño de Cebu-Philippines, we congratulate our bother for bringing honor to the Order. May he continue to inspire more people in his ministry.
